Before You Give an AI App Full Disk Access

Apple's October 2, 2026 announcement says it will introduce additional controls around Full Disk Access. It describes the permission as an unusually broad exception to protections for private data, originally supporting tasks such as backups. The announcement gives no release version or implementation date.

Your immediate decision is about the applications already asking for that permission. A tool that needs to edit a project does not automatically need the same access as software backing up the computer.

Start with the task you are approving

Write down one concrete job: edit files in a repository, search a selected folder, or back up the machine. Then ask the application owner which part requires Full Disk Access and what stops working without it.

Keep that answer with the software review. “The installation guide asked for it” tells you where the request came from; it does not explain why your company needs to accept it. Equally, refusing a backup or security tool's documented requirement without testing can break an operation you depend on.

Use a small review table:

RecordExample question
Intended workWhich files must this application read or change?
Requested permissionIs access limited to a selected location or broader?
Data handlingWhat leaves the device, and under which account?
OwnerWho can approve, remove, and retest the permission?

These questions apply to your deployment. They are not claims about every AI application's behavior.

Test with harmless files before connecting business data

Use a company-controlled test device or approved test account. Put synthetic content in a project folder and separate synthetic content outside it. Give the app the narrower access it supports and run the actual task you want employees to complete.

Record what works, what fails, and which additional permission the application requests. Check the vendor's current documentation before interpreting the result. An access error may describe a legitimate dependency; it is still a reason to investigate before expanding the grant.

Do not use real mailboxes or client documents to make the demonstration persuasive. The point is to determine the required boundary, not to produce a successful search of confidential files.

A permission decision needs a removal path

Choose an owner and a review trigger: a change in the application's purpose, vendor, account, or data-handling terms. Document how to remove access and what business function needs checking afterward.

For an app that cannot complete its intended job without broad access, make that tradeoff explicit. Decide whether the task warrants the exposure, whether a dedicated environment would reduce it, or whether another workflow meets the requirement. Apple's planned changes do not make that decision for your organization.
